Ask the Mayor: Why is Kīhei Aquatic Center Keiki Pool Closed?
Mayor Alan Arakawa answers some of the most-asked questions submitted to his staff.
Mr. Mayor,
Q: I’m wondering why the keiki pool at Kīhei Aquatic Center is closed. I have two toddlers and I would like to take them if playground is too hot to play.
I can’t take two toddlers to deep pool by myself. Are there any plans to open consistently and/or posting the opening schedule on the website ahead of time?
A: Although it is true that the keiki pool was closed for repairs it has since been reopened. However, we still have to close the pool if we are short on lifeguards for that particular day. To help remedy that situation, the county is in the process of hiring more lifeguards now, and are even offering free Red Cross lifeguard certifications available next month for youth ages 15 to 19.
For more information about the free lifeguard certification, call Frances Yamamoto at (808) 270-6138 or Sirena Lacour at (808) 270-7410 at the Aquatics Division.
