Hawai‘i Coronavirus Total Now 435: Maui Reports State’s 6th COVID-19 Death

As of noon on Wednesday, April 8, 2020, there are 435 cases of COVID-19 identified in Hawaiʻi with 25 new cases.

Maui County has 6 new cases for a total of 54 confirmed positive. Of the 54 cases in Maui County, at least 14 have been released from isolation, and 5 have required hospitalization.

Maui County now has a second death, bringing the state total death count related to COVID-19 to six, according to the state Department of Health. State Health Director Dr. Bruce Anderson said the Maui death involved an unattended death and was confirmed by the medical examiner.  Maui reported its first COVID-19 related death on Monday, April 6, of an adult male over the age of 65 with underlying health conditions and exposure to travelers.

NOTE: Maui Now reached out to the Department of Health for clarification on why the Maui case total only increased by six when the County had indicated that there is a cluster of 15 COVID-19 positive cases identified in employees at Maui Health. Dr. Anderson also said the 15 cluster cases on Maui are not new, contrary to earlier information provided by the Joint Information Center. He said the cases were found over time and were accounted for in earlier totals.

The Maui positive count includes a resident of the rural community of Hāna in East Maui and two residents of Molokaʻi.  The Island of Lānaʻi in Maui County continues to have no reported cases.

Additional new cases were identified on Oʻahu where there were 16 new cases for a total of 328 on that island.  Hawaiʻi Island had 3 new cases for a total of 26.  Kauaʻi’s count remained unchanged from yesterday at 18 COVID-19 positive cases.
