Update: Brush fire above Kapalua Airport burns 15 acres, 100% contained

A brush fire in the fields above Kapalua Airport burned 15 acres and was 100% contained by 7 a.m. on Tuesday. The fire was first reported in fallow agriculture lands at 12:35 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 3, 2025. Fire officials say the cause was accidental.
Firefighters remained on scene overnight to improve containment and work toward extinguishment. Firefighters from Maui Fire Department and the State Department of Land and Natural Resources will continue their work today to bring the fire to full extinguishment.
Additional support has been received from the State of Hawaiʻi Airport firefighters, and Department of Land and Natural Resources firefighters.
No evacuations were needed and no injuries were reported.
Responding units from the Maui Fire Department included: six engines, three wildland apparatus, two tankers, and two helicopters. They were supported by one ARFF engine, five DOFAW engines and two DOFAW tankers.
Conditions on scene included trades blowing at 5-10 mph.
King Kamehameha III Elementary closed Tuesday due to brush fire impacts
King Kamehameha III Elementary School in Lahaina will be closed today, Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2025, out of an abundance of caution. The closure will allow for a full inspection of the campus to assess any impacts of smoke exposure from the Kapalua fire.
The closure impacts both students and staff of King Kamehameha III Elementary School.
