Haleakalā Endangered Bird Collisions on the Rise

Officials at Haleakalā National Park say there has been a higher than normal number of vehicle strikes of endangered birds on park grounds.

The park road goes through the habitat of the endangered nēnē (Hawaiian Goose).

While signs are posted, the endangered nēnē are known to frequent park roads during the day.

Officials say the endangered ‘ua’u (Hawaiian petrel) also land along park roads at night and are difficult to see.

According to park officials, the birds do not readily move because they are unable to walk or fly quickly.

Park users are reminded to drive cautiously and obey the posted speed limits.
