The Maui Police Department announced the promotion of five Lieutenants to the rank of Captain.  All promotions took effect on June 16, 2023. Promotions include Captains: Terence Gomez, Nelson Hamilton, Bryan Manlapao, Joy Medeiros, and Clifton Perreira.

The Maui County Council’s Budget, Finance and Economic Development Committee will meet Monday at 6 p.m. to discuss and receive input on Bill 49 (2023)—which, if approved, would add a 0.5% surcharge on the 4% state general excise tax.

The state’s Environmental Court on Friday reduced the amount of water that can be taken from East Maui streams under revocable permits held by Alexander and Baldwin and East Maui Irrigation. 

A water service outage is planned on Olinda Road in Makawao between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. on June 21 and 22, 2023, the Maui Department of Water Supply reports.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation has issued a notice, advising Maui highway users that the newly installed traffic signals at Piʻilani Highway (Route 31) and its intersection with Okolani Drive/Mikioi Place will operate in flashing mode from Friday, June 23 through Sunday, June 25, 2023. This temporary action is to alert highway users to new signals that will serve as traffic control measures at the intersection.

The Water Authority, Social Services and Parks Committee, chaired by Sinenci, recruited and vetted East Maui Regional Community Board applicants following approval of a charter amendment by 64% of the voters at the Nov. 8 election. The summit eruption at Kīlauea volcano has paused, according to an update issued by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory Monday evening.

“As a councilmember, the public often approaches me about lands they would like to see protected for environmental and cultural reasons,” said Council member Johnson. “The point of Resolution 23-146 is to seek the Conservation Planning Committee’s expert opinion on what the County should do with some of these lands that have been identified by the public and community groups.” 

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating a burglary that occurred at the Merrie Monarch Festival office on Pi‘ilani Street in Hilo sometime between Sunday morning, June 18, and Monday morning, June 19, 2023. Police say unknown suspect(s) entered the establishment and removed numerous items valued at more than $2,700. One of the items removed was a distinct frame/board that contained 12 Merrie Monarch Royal Court Medals.
