Action Deferred on Proposed Kauaula Transient Camp
The Maui Planning Commission on Tuesday voted to defer action for 60 days on a conditional permit for the proposed Kauaula Transient campsite in West Maui. Among the issues raised against the project were potential fire threats from campers using barbeque grills or camping burners, traffic impacts, security issues, protection of archaeological sites and the proposed commercial element of the project.

Gov. David Ige has announced the formation of the Governor’s Leadership Team on Homelessness, which will be tasked with finding short- and long-term solutions as the state, city and federal governments work together to address homelessness in Hawai‘i.
5,000 Gallons of Waste Water Overflows in Lahaina
The overflow was caused by a control wire failure at the pump station and flowed from 11:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Waste water flowed from a sewer manhole along the Honoapiʻilani Highway into a storm drain during the incident and discharged into the Kāʻanapali Golf Course Pond.
Māʻalaea Plantation Subdivision Proposed on 257 Acres
The project calls for 58 affordable single-family homes, and 55 market demand lots on approximately 257 acres located in the state agricultural district, mauka of the Honoapiʻilani Highway.
Pickup Overturns in Makawao, Four Teens Transported to Hospital
The collision occurred as a Toyota Tundra pickup truck, traveling north on Makani Road, lost control around a turn and overturned on the roadway, ejecting two of its rear seat passengers.

Active Shooter Exercises Planned at Four Maui Schools: July 27 & 28: Members of the Maui Police Department and Department of Education, will be participating in Joint Agency Emergency Preparedness Exercises TODAY and TOMORROW at a total of four Maui schools, police announced today. Today’s exercises run from 8 to 11 a.m. at MAUI HIGH SHOOL and 12 to 2 p.m. at the WAIHEE SCHOOL. On Tuesday, July 28, 2015, exercises are planned in the morning from 8 to 11 a.m. at the PUKALANI ELEMENTARY; and in the afternoon from 12 to 2 p.m. at MAKAWAO ELEMENTARY.
Hawaiʻi Beverage Container Fee to Decrease by Half Cent
Effective Sept. 1, 2015, the fee will decrease to one-cent per container in response to the state’s redemption rate, which decreased from 72.6% in fiscal year 2014 to 68.4% in the last fiscal year, which ended in June 2015.
2 Boats Grounded off Maui: in Lahaina and La Perouse
Firefighters on Maui responded to two separate boat grounding incidents on Sunday, July 26, 2015. A 20-foot fishing vessel was discovered on the rocks near La Perouse Bay in South Maui at around 4:56 a.m.; and a 30-foot sailboat was found on a reef just inside the wave break fronting 505 Front Street at around 3:08 p.m.

20 Join Maui Police Department in 81st Recruit Graduation
Twenty members of the Maui Police Department’s 81st Recruit Class graduated today in a ceremony at the King Kamehameha Golf in Waikapū. The department’s Outstanding Recruit Award went to Officer Chase Bell for presenting the most consistent achievement in the areas of training, leadership, judgement, attitude and service to others.
VIDEO UPDATE: Search for Billy Oliveira Continues, Missing Since July 13
The search continues for William “Billy” Oliveira, who was last seen Monday July 13, 2015 in the Nāhiku area of East Maui. Maui police say their search for Oliveira remains “active,” and at this point authorities do not suspect foul play, according to Lieutenant William Juan with the Maui Police Department’s Community Relations section. Family members, meantime, are relying on the help of the Maui Search and Rescue organization to assist in an ongoing ground search of areas including the East Maui shoreline and Upcountry areas.
Bad Leak at Old Wailuku Pool Forces Closure
Park staff noticed the leak yesterday, and measured a seven inch water loss over a 12 hour period. It is estimated if the pool continues to lose water at that rate it will be drained empty within seven days.
Convoy Rescheduled: Haleakalā Summit Road to Close During Wide Load Transport
The announcement comes on the heels of a cancelled convoy in June amid ongoing issues surrounding development atop the summit areas of some of Hawaiʻi’s highest mountains.
