VIDEO: Governor Vetos 8 Bills, Marijuana Dispensaries Still Under Review
Governor Ige has informed the legislature of his intent to veto a list of eight bills. Noticeably absent from the list was the controversial marijuana dispensaries bill, which the governor continues to review. “There are concerns in terms of the implementation. The implementation schedule is very aggressive. We’ll be working very hard to meet those deadlines, but resources made available to the department as well as the aggressive schedule will be a challenge. So, I’m committed to implementing the law in the best way that we can,” said Gov. Ige.
Mauna Kea Summit Road Remains Closed Until Further Notice
The Mauna Kea summit road beginning at the Halepōhaku mid-level facilities will remain closed to all but authorized personnel until further notice, according to an announcement issued today by the University of Hawaiʻi.
Kona Man Dies After Injuries From Domestic Dispute
A 20-year-old Kona man has died from injuries he received in a domestic dispute on June 21, 2015 at a home on Awakea Street in Kailua-Kona. Ezra Barro of was pronounced dead early Sunday morning, at Kaiser Medical Center on Oʻahu.
Fire Near Lahaina Homeless Camp Burns Half-Acre
A fire in an area frequented by homeless campers in West Maui burned a half-acre of brush before being brought under control on Sunday afternoon. The fire was reported at 2:51 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, 2015 on the Lahaina side of Hōkiokio Place, mauka of the Honoapiʻilani Highway in Puamana.

Veteran Maui Officer Arrested Again, This Time on Mainland
A veteran Maui officer who was arrested earlier this month for operating a vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant, was picked up again, this time for being drunk in public in Newport Beach, California.
Suspicious Fire Burns 4 Acres of Sugar Cane in Pāʻia
The incident was the second unscheduled cane fire in as many days reported in the Pāʻia area. The latest fire was reported at 8:42 p.m. on Friday near Hāna Highway and the Pāʻia mini-bypass.
Health Department Taking Action to Reduce New HIV Cases in Hawaiʻi
Between 2008 and 2012, there were 456 new HIV cases diagnosed in Hawaiʻi: 77% on Oʻahu and the remainder on the neighbor islands. By the end of 2011, there was an estimated 2,200 persons living with HIV in Hawaiʻi. The department is now prescribing Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis or PrEP to uninfected individuals who are at high risk for infection.
MCCC Pre-Trial Detainee Caught in Razor Wire in Attempted Escape
Pre-trial detainee Samson Hill tried to scale the 14-foot fence and was caught in the razor wire. Corrections officers pulled him down from the fence and quickly restrained him. The incident was reported at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Friday, June 26, 2015
VIDEO: Emergency Ban on Sea Cucumber Harvesting Approved
The Hawaiʻi Board of Land and Natural Resources today approved an emergency rule that makes it illegal to take any species of sea cucumber from Hawaiʻi State waters for the next 120 days. The rule was in response to confirmed reports of a new commercial fishery that recently started. Authorities say the investigation was supported further by public observations.
