Cynthia Razo-Porter was sworn in as County of Maui Director of Personnel Services on Wednesday. She has served as deputy director of the department since 2016 and has been employed at the County of Maui for more than 26 years, starting in 1996.
DLNR: 50-60 coral colonies were damaged by lane markers from canoe regatta
Approximately 50-60 coral colonies sustained a range of minimal-to-significant damage from 60-pound cinder blocks placed in the ocean for a canoe regatta on Hawaiʻi Island last weekend, officials said. Dive teams with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Aquatic Resources spent Tuesday documenting and photographing damage at Kailua Bay.

Renaming of Puamana Beach Park gets initial backing
When explaining the significance of the name “Waiahiokole,” Keʻeaumoku Kapu, CEO of Aha Moku said “kole” means raw, and “waiahi” talks about the turbulence during the time of the shark birthing process. In addition to the literal translation, Kapu said scholars that he reached out to told him it was also named after a prominent chief that lived in the area. Dr. Janet Six, principal archaeologist for the County of Maui said, that while “Puamana definitely is a Hawaiian word–it just is one that was assigned to a large plantation house in the 1920s.” She explained that the area is historically a large grave site.
