The Kamehameha Schools Maui football team will look to finish what previous squads started as they play in the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Division II state title game for the third time in four years. The Warriors have a chance for their first state crown in football as they face Kaiser on Saturday.

Despite all the different looks and personnel moves Maui High School utilized, none could change the outcome of Saturday’s “Big Game” against cross-town rival Baldwin High School.

Baldwin High School’s backup running back Daniel Corpuz rushed for 99 yards and two first-quarter touchdowns to help the Bears preserve a 19-13 victory over Lahainaluna Saturday night in an otherwise meaningless Maui Interscholastic League football game at War Memorial Stadium.

Baldwin High School’s Kamaki Gouveia did work on Labor Day, rushing for two touchdowns and 158 yards on 21 carries as Baldwin grabbed control of the Maui Interscholastic League Division I first-round race with a 36-21 holiday win over Maui High.

Kapaa High School’s Kurt Napoleon threw for one touchdown and ran for another to lead the visiting Warriors of Garden Isle over Lahainaluna on Saturday, 21-0.

Seabury Hall’s Cameron Hanisch sank the game-winning 3-pointer with no time remaining to lift the Spartans over top-seeded Saint Francis in overtime 40-37 in Friday’s Division II state championship semifinal at Kaimuki gym.

At Lahainaluna High School, defense wins championships. Saturday night the school’s football team rode the coattails of its defensive unit to claim yet another Maui Interscholastic League Division II championship, sneaking by a stubborn Kamehameha Maui team 14-10 at War Memorial Stadium.

The last time Dylan Delatori played quarterback was his freshman season three years ago. On Friday, the Lahainaluna High School senior played the position with the poise and precision of a veteran, throwing a pair of touchdown passes to Ronnie Espiritu, including the game-winner late in the fourth quarter to beat Kamehameha Maui, 20-14, at Kanaiaupuni Stadium.

This time, Lahainaluna is bigger, stronger and more experienced.

Lahainaluna High School co-head coach Bobby Watson had a good feeling about Saturday’s game with Kamehameha Hawaii.

Four years ago, Lahainaluna High School kept six freshmen on its 44-player varsity roster.
