Kalaupapa resident, John Arruda celebrates 100 years of life today. In a statement, Arruda said, “The State of Hawai‘i has provided me with everything, and that’s why I have this beautiful Kalaupapa, which has kept me going all these years and where I call home.”

Bishop Larry Silva of the Diocese of Honolulu, will bless a bronze image entitled Father Damien, created by Maui-based sculptor Dale Zarella in honor of Saint Damien, the Belgian priest who volunteered to care for patients exiled to Molokaʻi.

ProArts and Oh Boy Productions present the 20th Anniversary Production of Damien, the playhouse’s first theatrical show in 16 months. The production, written by Aldyth Morris and starring Vinnie Linares, will have six performances: July 16, 17, 23 and 24 at 7:30 pm, and matinees July 18 and 25 at 3 pm at the playhouse in Azeka Center in Kīhei.

Educational entertainment and local politics will be the main topics at the Kula Community Association’s meeting set to start at 7 p.m. tonight (Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2015) at the Kula Community Center.

A portion of New York’s 33rd Street was co-named Father Damien Way today after the 19th-century Roman Catholic Priest from Belgium, who is recognized in Hawaiʻi for is work with Hansen’s disease patients in Kalaupapa on Molokaʻi.
