Hawaiʻi State Federal Credit Union announced that it will donate $50,000 to support local food banks and pantries as families across the state face growing food insecurity caused by the ongoing federal government shutdown and the reduction of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.

Gov. Josh Green and the Hawaiʻi Department of Human Services have announced that SNAP recipients should be able to spend the additional $250 in relief funds beginning Nov. 10, four full days earlier than anticipated. Recipients should be able to see the extra $250 in their accounts now, as a pending benefit.

Brandi Saragosa, Chief Operating Officer at the Maui Food Bank shares some thoughts in observance of Hunger Action Month in September. In this op-ed piece she said, “It is a reminder that none of our neighbors should go hungry. It’s a time to raise awareness about food insecurity and to stand together as a community so everyone has access to nutritious food.”

This April, Project Keiki returns to Foodland stores statewide to raise funds for Hawaiʻi’s local food banks dedicated to fighting food insecurity. Beneficiaries include Hawaiʻi Foodbank on Oʻahu and Kauaʻi, Maui Food Bank, and The Food Basket on Hawaiʻi Island.

More than 250,000 pounds of fresh, locally grown produce has been harvested and redistributed across Maui through Common Ground Collective’s Foster Farm Program to date. By transforming surplus backyard produce into a critical food source, the program is quickly reshaping the island’s approach to food security, resource management and sustainability.

Mail carriers from Maui to Maine will lead the Postal Service’s effort to “Stamp Out Hunger” this Saturday, May 11 in the 32nd annual National Association of Letter Carriers’ Food Drive. 

The Realtors Association of Maui launches a two-week-long virtual food drive today to help the Maui Food Bank continue to provide hunger relief during the COVID-19 pandemic. Spearheaded by RAM’s public relations committee, the “Got Rice?” campaign runs Aug. 1 through 15 and aims to collect $10,000 to fill the Maui Food Bank’s shelves with bags of rice.  

Eight local agents (Paul MacDonald, Mark Zion, Chad Santiago, Mark Rich, Wayde Omura, Kit Okazaki, Liza Souza, and Marianne Curry) have collectively donated $2,500.

Right now, the public can donate to Food Banks and go online to sign up to Volunteer for the future in case of emergency or Essential Volunteer Needs weekly at www.handsonmaui.com and statewide with Kanu Hawaiʻi.
