Nā Koa Manu Conservation announces leadership transition, new staff appointment

Effective November 2024, Sarah McLane Bryan has assumed the role of President of the Board of Directors, succeeding Bryan Berkowitz, who will continue to serve as Vice President. Sarah previously served as Vice President and, along with Bryan, was a founding board member of Nā Koa Manu Conservation, Inc. in 2015.

Christmas bird count focuses on endangered Hawaiʻi forest birds

To wrap up The Year of the Forest Birds (ka Makahiki o Nā Manu Nahele) in Hawai‘i, more than a dozen volunteers joined staff from the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife to count birds ahead of the Christmas holiday.

Bissen is third mayor to sign Year of the Forest Bird Proclamation

Maui Mayor Richard T. Bissen, Jr. signed a proclamation to recognize 2024 as Ka Makahiki o Nā Manu Nahele, Year of The Forest Birds, on Wednesday. This action follows Gov. Josh Green, M.D.’s proclamation in January and county proclamations on Hawaiʻi Island on Feb. 1, and on Kaua‘i on March 11.

Hawaiʻi Wildlife Conservation stamp contest opens

Artists are welcome to submit entries to the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife in the 2024-25 Hawai‘i Wildlife Conservation and Game Bird Stamp annual art contest. The wildlife conservation stamp is a requirement for Hawai‘i state hunting licensees. The game bird stamp is required for anyone intending to hunt game birds. Both stamps will also be available to stamp collectors.  

Game cameras capture forest birds in eruption zone, ecological impacts assessed

A field team with the state Division of Forestry and Wildlife was at Pu‘u Maka‘ala on Hawaiʻi Island earlier this week to assess ecological impacts of the Mauna Loa eruption on native forest birds.

Input sought on mosquito suppression efforts to address impacts of avian malaria on Maui

Haleakalā National Park is seeking public input on an environmental assessment for the “Suppression of Non-native Mosquito Populations to Address the Impacts of Avian Malaria on Threatened and Endangered Forest Birds on Maui.” The assessment will determine the impacts of using a new technique to manage mosquitoes in East Maui.

Maui parrotbill bird blessing and naming ceremony

A hui of state and federal wildlife and conservation agencies will hold a blessing and name dedication ceremony for the endangered Maui Parrotbill bird this weekend.
