Kaho‘olawe Nine protest helped spark rebirth of sacred island 50 years ago today
Two events will be held today to mark the 50th anniversary of a watershed moment that eventually led the U.S. military to stop bombing Kaho’olawe and put the island at the center of the Hawaiian rights movement.
50th anniversary observance planned for the landing of the “Kahoʻolawe Nine” at Kūheʻeia
The Protect Kahoʻolawe ʻOhana observes the 50th Anniversary of the landing of the “Kahoʻolawe Nine” at Kūheʻeia on the island of Kahoʻolawe. The observance comes after a press conference on Jan. 4, 2026.
Movie at the Old Prison features screening of Hawaiian Soul, March 25
Hawaiian Soul, a narrative short film dedicated to Hawaiian activist and musician George Jarret Helm Jr., will be screened at this month’s “Movie at the Old Prison” on the lawn of the Old Prison. The free event will be held on Saturday, March 25 at 7 p.m. Director/writer/producer ʻĀina Paikai and executive co-producer Lincoln Wong will be guest speakers.

“Hawaiian Soul” Short Film Honoring George Helm, Jr., Screening in Mākena, July 19
Hawaiian Soul, a narrative short-film based on the true story of Hawaiian hero, musician, and activist, George Jarrett Helm, Jr., is coming to Maui with a free community screening in Mākena on Monday July 19, 2021 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Mākena Beach & Golf Resort’s oceanfront lawn adjacent to Maluaka Beach.
