The Hawaiʻi State Senate unanimously approved SB2381 SD2, which would establish a comprehensive system of public financing for candidates seeking election to state and county public offices, beginning with the 2028 general election year. The bill asserts that publicly funding the campaigns of candidates for state and county offices would increase public confidence in the State’s candidates and elected officials.

The legislation, titled “Related to public financing for candidates for elected office,” is aimed at helping to level the playing field for working class candidates and people of all backgrounds, to create a more fair elections system and help reduce the influence of private money in elections.

Former Hawaiʻi State Rep. Ty J.K. Cullen, 42, of Waipahu, Hawaiʻi, was sentenced Thursday to two years in federal prison for honest services wire fraud.  

A former Maui official was sentenced today to 10 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to honest services wire fraud involving the acceptance of multiple bribes totaling up to $2 million.

In August 2022, the District of Hawaiʻi recovered $75,000 from the former Majority Leader of the State of Hawaii Senate, Jamie Kalani English, in partial payment of the $100,000 fine imposed for honest services wire fraud, according to the release.

Another former Maui County official with the Maui County Department of Environmental Management, Wilfred Tamayo Savella, 71, is the latest individual to be charged with taking bribes in a scheme tied to Honolulu businessman Milton Choy.

A former Maui County public official has been charged in one of the largest fraud and public corruption cases investigated by the United States Attorney’s Office in Hawaiʻi.

Senior United States District Judge Susan Oki Mollway today sentenced former Senate Majority Leader J. Kalani English, to 40 months in federal prison. The 55 year old Maui resident was also ordered to pay a fine of $100,000.

Senate Majority Leader J. Kalani English today announced his retirement from the Hawaiʻi State Senate, effective on May 1, 2021, citing long-term effects of COVID-19.
