Day 7: Fire Burns 9,000 Acres on Kaho‘olawe, More Than 30% of Island Scorched

A fire that was first reported on Saturday, Feb. 22, has burned just under 9,000 acres on the island of Kahoʻolawe, according to an update from the Kahoʻolawe Island Reserve Commission.

Active Kahoʻolawe Fire Chars More Than 6,000 Acres

The department is unable to carry out firefighting efforts by land or air due to concerns over unexploded ordnances that still exist on the island.

Day 4: Kaho‘olawe Fire Blackens Nearly 20% of Island

A fire on Kahoʻolawe continues to burn into a fourth day, and has already blackened nearly 20% of the island, according to an update issued this morning by the Kahoʻolawe Island Reserve Commission.

Kahoʻolawe Blaze Burns Over 5,000 Acres

After conducting an aerial survey this morning, fire officials confirmed that a brush fire that ignited on Kahoʻolawe on Saturday has now scorched 5,400 acres. 

Kahoʻolawe Fire Sparked by Catalytic Converter

The fire was started by a vehicle’s catalytic converter. The brush fire burned a total of about 15 acres.
