Preparations to begin for construction of EV charging station at Kapalua Airport
Construction work will begin on Monday, Nov. 24, for a new electric vehicle charging station at the Kapalua Airport. A portion of the mauka side of the parking lot will be closed 24/7 during the work. There will be no impact to flights or airport operations.
King Kamehameha III Elementary School will be rebuilt close to original site on Front Street
The elementary school that burned in the Lahaina wildfire of 2023 will be rebuilt on the 14-acre Ku’ia site that is near the original location but inland and out of the tsunami inundation zone.
Emergency siren installation work to close lanes on Honoapiʻilani Highway near Kapalua Airport

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Education today released a report summarizing input and opinions from a series of community feedback opportunities on the rebuild plan for King Kamehameha III Elementary School. A total of 485 community members – including faculty/staff, current school family members, alumni, and interested community members – completed feedback surveys, delivered via three formats: at a staff/faculty meeting, two open community meetings, or online.

Maui set for another fast EV charging station, part of 11 station build-out statewide
On Friday, the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation opened its second electric vehicle charging station in the state funded by the federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program. The $3.5 million station opened at 8 a.m. at Aloha Tower Marketplace on O‘ahu.
Three options considered for permanent site of King Kamehameha III Elementary School in Lahaina
On Tuesday night, the Hawaii Department of Education (HIDOE) sought community feedback on the site selection for King Kamehameha III Elementary School to rebuild its permanent location, after its original campus was lost to the Aug. 8, 2023 wildfire.
Speed limit reduced on portion of Akahele St. in West Maui
The state Department of Transportation advises motorists of a reduced speed limit on Akahele St., mauka of Honoapi‘ilani Highway (Route 30) from 30 mph to 20 mph. The reduction is to accommodate school traffic from the temporary King Kamehameha III Elementary School site, which has its entrance and exit along Akahele St. The school is makai of the Kapalua Airport.
A place for healing: Temporary King Kamehameha III campus blessed
The dedication and blessing of the temporary campus for Kamehameha III Elementary School, makai of Kapalua Airport, was a milestone for the community of Lahaina on Monday as residents took another step in recovering from the August wildfires.
Progress update: 17 of 30 classrooms in place at temporary campus for King Kamehameha III elementary
The site is designed for 600 students and features 30 planned classrooms. As of Christmas, 17 classrooms were already in place. The entrance to the 10 acre site is via Akahele Street below the Kapalua Airport.
FBI: Laser sightings documented near airports on Maui, Kauaʻi
Recent sightings of lasers in and around Kahului and Kapalua Airport were reported and documented in the past week. Pilots landing at the airports have experienced a green laser illuminating their aircraft while on approach to land.
