The UHERO second quarter forecast for 2025 reports: “sharp increases in US import tariffs, sweeping federal layoffs, and volatile fiscal and immigration policies are undermining consumer confidence, raising inflation expectations, and worsening the business outlook—both nationally and in Hawaiʻi’s visitor-dependent economy.”

In April 2024, Maui County had the largest vacation rental supply at 246,500 available unit nights (+4.7% vs. 2023, -4.4% vs. 2019), and Maui vacation rental unit supply continued to be impacted by the Aug. 8 wildfire. The data was included in the state Department of Business Economic Development and Tourism’s Hawaiʻi Vacation Rental Performance Report.

Team Vacation-Maui, a vacation condo rental sales and management team, has pledged more than $100,000 in free short-term accommodations to the front-line workers fighting against COVID-19.

Maui County had the largest vacation rental supply of all four counties in January 2020 with 265,400 unit nights, which is an increase of 27.2 percent compared to a year ago.

The county may impose civil fines of $20,000 plus $10,000 per day for each day the unlawful operation persists, unless a higher fine is authorized by State law.

I was wondering what the laws are regarding a short-term bedroom rental in my home.

Maui County Budget and Finance Committee Chair Riki Hokama has proposed a 40% property tax increase for Commercialized Residential permitted properties—Maui’s bed-and-breakfast properties, while maintaining or reducing tax rates by 2% for other classifications.

Is anyone “grandfathered in” from having to get a vacation rental permit if the short-term has been in existence since 1999 or 2000?

Vacation rental properties in Wailea and Kāʻanapali on Maui were ranked among the top 10 in the nation according to traveler reviews compiled by TripAdvisor for 2014.

There are opportunities for first-time property buyers in South Maui. In Kīhei alone, there are approximately 70 individual single-family, fee-simple homes available.
