The NTSB is investigating the crash of a Cessna 172 airplane near Kahului Airport on Saturday morning, Dec. 23, 2023.

The pilot of a small airplane involved in a crash near the Hāna Airport in East Maui last month said the aircraft stopped climbing shortly after takeoff, and descended nose-down into nearby trees.

One man was able to walk away from the wreckage. Engine 7 personnel utilized vehicle extrication equipment to free the second individual from entrapment within the plane.

The propeller of a single-engine aircraft slowed to a stop in mid-air, as Coast Guard video captured the Cirrus SR-22 dropping nose-first before leveling out and landing in the ocean via parachute, 253 miles northeast of Maui on Sunday, Jan. 25.

The pilot told transportation safety investigators that while in cruise flight, he noticed a slight hesitation in the engine on two occasions, within 5 to 10 minutes of each other.

According to the report, the Piper PA28 aircraft, involved in the incident sustained “substantial” damage. The FAA report described the emergency as a “forced landing.”

All four people aboard a small plane are uninjured after the aircraft they were in made an emergency landing in a residential area of Waiehu in the Wailuku District of Maui. Authorities say crews responded to the report at around 5:38 p.m. on Sunday, June 16,2 013, in an area makai of Lower Waiehu Beach Road.

The determination to suspend the search was made at 3 p.m., on Monday, December 3, pending further information. “The decision to suspend a search is one of the hardest a commanding officer has to make,” said Captain Joanna Nunan

The Coast Guard has released the identity of the pilot aboard a private Cessna aircraft that went missing last night as Jose Krall. He is a master baker and owner of the Maui Bake Shop and Deli in Wailuku.
