“I’ve never said any race is a given,” West Maui state Rep. Elle Cochran said Saturday night. “A race is a race and people need options and I believe in all that. And who knows? I mean our whole town has been torn upside down. I don’t know where people’s heads are at or what they’re thinking. We’re just so divided right now. I mean really, our town is very divided.”

“Everybody’s staying very, very focused about the issues happening around Lahaina,” said Archie Kalepa, a veteran waterman with deep roots in West Maui. “Everything’s somehow in some shape or form connected to politics. It’s more important than ever for us to be vigilant, to be voting, to make sure we continue to get the support that Lahaina needs.”

Registered voters in Maui County may receive their ballot packets as early as July 15. 

Saturday’s turnout was the highest for a primary election in Maui County in two decades, but still the lowest in the state.

The Kula Community Association hosts an Upcountry Primary Election Candidate Forum on Wednesday, June 27 from 5:30 to 9 p.m.

Due to the continuing volcanic eruption, the Office of Elections issued a proclamation today designating polling places 04-03, Pāhoa Community Center, and 04-04, Pāhoa High/Intermediate School, as absentee mail precincts for the 2018 Primary Election.

The ruling keeps Hawaiʻi’s primary elections open to all registered voters, regardless of their formal party affiliation.

Early voting for the 2016 primary elections got underway on Monday with early walk-in voting at the county clerk’s office in Wailuku and at the Mitchell Pauole Center on Molokaʻi.

2016 Drive-thru Voter Registration location on Maui is at Baldwin High School Auditorium from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Property taxes, water rights and development are among the issues to be discussed at an Upcountry Aloha ʻĀina candidate forum.

Individuals interested in becoming a candidate may obtain and file a nomination paper at various locations statewide by 4:30 p.m., on Tuesday, June 7, 2016.
