A cottage fire in Pukalani early Saturday morning caused an estimated $60,000 in damage to the structure and $12,000 in damage to its contents, according to Maui fire officials.

An active brush fire is currently burning near the Haleakalā Highway below Pukalani. Witnesses say the blaze appears to be moving fast under brisk winds. Heavy smoke could be seen from the neighboring community mauka of the fire.

Upon arrival, crews reported about a half acre of brush actively burning on the north slope of the gulch adjacent to ʻĀina Lani Drive. Authorities say the fire was within 20 feet of area homes.
