Update 11:56 a.m. 7/30/13: Maui police started intermittent contra flow on Hāna Hwy at milepost 28 where crews are still working to repair downed poles and wires. Hawaiian Tel is on scene, estimated completion time is between 5 and 6 p.m.

The parade is the official launch to the 33rd Annual World Whale Day Celebration.

The current closure began today and will remain in effect through Monday. During this time, work will take place between sunrise and sunset, but the closure will remain in effect around the clock.

Erosion damage caused by ocean waves has undermined the eastbound (Kihei-bound) shoulder lane on Honoapiilani Highway, forming a crack in the asphalt pavement. State DOT officials say the eastbound lane will be closed around the clock until repairs can be made. In the interim, traffic will be contraflowed through the westbound lane.

The Honoaiilani Highway is now open in both directions. The motor vehicle accident reported earlier in the evening has since been cleared. It could take a while before cars stuck in the delay clear, and traffic resumes a normal flow.

A fire mauka of Hanakaoo Beach Park burned an estimated 1.5 acres on Tuesday afternoon. The brush fire also forced the closure of a single north-bound lane on the Honoapiilani Highway for about two hours.
