Nearly 500 frontline healthcare workers at Kaiser’s Maui Health System have voted to ratify a new three-year contract, ending a nearly two-month strike.

The Maui Health and United Public Workers bargaining teams reached an agreement following lengthy talks on Tuesday, March 14. Striking Maui Health employees will now review the agreement and vote on whether or not to ratify it. Voting takes place over three days, March 16, 17 and 18.

Talks between United Public Worker employees and Maui Health resumed on Monday, March 6, but broke down after just two hours.

This settlement agreement of 20% compensates Bargaining Unit 01 workers in Maui County for hazardous work they performed during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The recess will allow time to negotiate a possible settlement with the UPW in its lawsuit objecting to the transition. A final vote is expected on July 20.

Despite the developments, announced by the Attorney General’s office, those close to the situation say negotiations continue and the order still prevents the parties from closing the transaction.
