Will efforts to reach displaced Lahaina voters pay off? Today’s primary election may tell

“Everybody’s staying very, very focused about the issues happening around Lahaina,” said Archie Kalepa, a veteran waterman with deep roots in West Maui. “Everything’s somehow in some shape or form connected to politics. It’s more important than ever for us to be vigilant, to be voting, to make sure we continue to get the support that Lahaina needs.”

Maui logs 34.8% voter turnout

Voter turnout in Maui County was 34.8% for the 2022 Primary Election, with 39,493 ballots cast out of 113,427 registered voters.

“This represents tremendous civic engagement, and people who vote for the first time tend to stay voters,” said University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa political science Associate Professor and Public Policy Center Director Colin Moore.

Voter Turnout Down, Maui at 52%

In Maui County total turnout was 50,475 or 52.2% of the 96,721 registered voters.

Maui Primary Voter Turnout Highest in 20 Years

Saturday’s turnout was the highest for a primary election in Maui County in two decades, but still the lowest in the state.

Voter Turnout Up Across the State: Maui at 56.4%

Maui’s voter turnout improved from 52.7% in 2014 to 56.4% this year. Of the 93,912 registered voters in Maui County, 52,969 cast ballots in the General Election.

Maui County No Longer in Last Place for Voter Turnout

Turnout in Maui County was still low, but bucked it’s recent trend as the lowest in the state. That title went to Hawaiʻi County this time around, which recorded a 47.7% turnout.
