World’s Oldest Banded Wild Bird Returns to Midway Atoll in Time for her 70th Birthday. It is estimated that Wisdom has laid between 30-36 eggs in her lifetime.

At least 69 years old, biologists have confirmed that Wisdom has laid an egg and has joined her mate in taking turns to incubate it.

“In the face of dramatic seabird population decreases worldwide –70% drop since the 1950’s when Wisdom was first banded–Wisdom has become a symbol of hope and inspiration,” said Refuge Manager, Dan Clark.

The 62-year-old Laysan albatross known as “Wisdom” has likely raised at least 30 to 35 chicks during her breeding life.

The oldest known wild bird in the U.S., is a new mother at the age of 60.
