The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation notifies highway users that runners will be on a portion of Honoapiʻilani Highway (Route 30) for the Maui Marathon on Sunday, April 26.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation is advising highway users that work will begin next week to replace a drain line underneath Honoapi‘ilani Highway (Route 30).   

Crews will be removing a boulder caught in the protective netting and also performing rock scaling and other rock removal work from 9 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 20 to 4:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 21. The work will be between mileposts 10.45 to 10.55 on the Lahaina side of the Olowalu Tunnel, also known as the “Pali Tunnel.” The road will be intermittently closed in both directions for up to 10 minutes.

The Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has completed its Ukumehame Mile Marker 13.5 Wildfire Risk Reduction Project to remove hazardous wildfire fuel on approximately 42 acres of County of Maui property off Honoapiʻilani Highway that experienced a dozen fires in the last two years, per an announcement Wednesday.

Maui residents are invited to review and provide feedback on landscape design proposals for the Ukumehame and Olowalu coastal corridor, as three upcoming meetings look to conclude nearly a year of community input on the project.

To maintain safe and reliable service, Hawaiian Electric will be performing overnight work to upgrade equipment along Honoapiʻilani Highway in three West Maui areas on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 9 p.m. to Friday, Oct. 24 at 5 a.m. No service interruptions are planned for this work.

The involvement of alcohol is considered a factor in a rollover crash that resulted in the hospitalization of an 18-year-old driver from Wailuku. The teen was ejected from the vehicle and suffered critical, life-threatening injuries in the crash. He was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment. The front passenger, an 18-year-old Wailuku male, and the rear passenger, an 18-year-old Waiheʻe male, both sustained minor injuries and were transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation has officially designated a section of Honoapiʻilani Highway near Mile Post 14 a traffic emergency zone, citing serious erosion beneath the road that threatens to cut off access to West Maui.

An approximately 150-foot-long stretch of the makai lane on Honoapi‘ilani Highway is being undermined just about half mile south of Olowalu Village. Immediate actions include moving the existing barricades along the makai shoulder further mauka. Other work will include stabilizing the shoreline and pushing lanes more mauka.

A fire along the makai side of the Honoapiʻilani Highway burned an estimated area of 300 by 200 feet before being brought under control on Saturday afternoon.

Three sites have been selected for up-close plans: Olowalu town, Mile Marker 14 and Ukumehame Beach Park.

The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation is advising highway users to use caution and expect delays on Saturday, March 15, as the Valley to the Sea Half Marathon, along with its 10k and 5k races run through the Wailuku and Māʻalaea area.

More than 50 community members showed up for a planning meeting for the “Olowalu: The Road to Resilience” study being developed due to the upcoming realignment of Honoapi’ilani Highway from Ukumahame to Olowalu.

The $160 million project is part of a yearslong effort to move Honoapi’ilani Highway away from the shoreline and improve access to and from West Maui.

To safely make urgent repairs to a pole impacted by the storm, Hawaiian Electric crews will require a road closure on Honoapi‘ilani Highway between mile markers 2 and 3 between Waikō Road and Kamehameha Golf Course Road in Waikapū today, Jan. 31, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Motorists will be detoured to Kūihelani Hwy. and Waikō Road. No service interruptions are expected.

The Honoapiʻilani Highway between Kuihelani Highway and the Maui Tropical Plantation is scheduled to be closed from noon to 2 p.m. today as Hawaiian Electric Company removes a leaning utility pole. A detour will route traffic through Waiko Road and the Kuihelani Highway.
