FAA study: Kahului Airport relatively low-risk for runway safety; more incidents reported at Honolulu
A new study on runway safety at US airports shows that Kahului Airport had no high-risk runway incursions between 2021 and 2024. All 11 of the airport’s recorded runway incursions during that four-year period were classified as lower-risk events.
Air travelers advised of screening delays at Kahului and Kona airports

Matthew Pires, 37, becomes the youngest Fire Chief in history at the Kahului Airport Rescue Fire-Fighting station, according to family members. He follows in the footsteps of his dad, Scott “Pomai” Pires who was Maui Airport Fire Chief for almost 10 years, retiring in May 2022.

New passenger waiting area dedicated at Kahului Airport on Maui
The new space, which serves Gates 1 to 15 in the airport’s southern concourse, was constructed by connecting two existing waiting areas, each approximately 6,000 square feet, and enclosing the open-air walkway that separated them. The result is a spacious 17,000-square-feet, air-conditioned area that can seat 460 passengers. In addition, a newly created garden deck provides an outdoor seating option for Kahului passengers.

Maui rainfall totals below 50% of average for November 2024
Despite the recent dry conditions, rainfall totals for 2024 through the end of November were still near to above average at most of the gages across Maui County. The rain gage at West Wailuaiki Stream had the highest year-to-date total of 198.49 inches (95% of average).
Hawaiʻi air travelers advised to plan ahead for Thanksgiving holiday travel
The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation reminds travelers to give themselves extra time at the airport this Thanksgiving holiday season in anticipation of increased passengers and limited parking at Hawai‘i’s five busiest airports. The Kahului Airport may also see an increase in travelers due to the Maui Invitational, which runs Nov. 25 through 27 at the Lahaina Civic Center.
CLEAR opens TSA PreCheck enrollment location at Kahului Airport
CLEAR has announced four new enrollment locations, including one at Kahului Airport, allowing consumers to enroll or renew in TSA PreCheck. Formerly, IDEMIA Wailuku was the only location on Maui where one could enroll in TSA PreCheck.
Emergency training exercise at Kahului Airport on Friday
The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation notifies the public that a training exercise will be conducted at the Kahului Airport from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 20. The Kahului Airport Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighters will conduct an emergency training exercise that tests the response to a simulated aircraft incident on a Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft. The exercise is a requirement by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Aug. 12-13: Rescheduled utility work to impact traffic on Dairy Road
To ensure reliable service, maintenance utility pole work that will impact area traffic along Dairy Road fronting the Maui Marketplace in Kahului has been rescheduled to Monday, Aug. 12 and Tuesday, Aug. 13, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. No service interruptions are planned for this work. The work was originally scheduled for Aug. 5 and 6.
