Luis P. Salaveria has been selected to be the next University of Hawaiʻi vice president for budget and finance and chief financial officer.

Former State Budget Director Kalbert Young (formerly of Maui) has been appointed to serve as the Vice President for Budget and Finance and Chief Financial Officer of the University of Hawai‘i System.

State finance director Kalbert Young said the projected revenue assure Hawaii taxpayers that the fiscal condition of the state is and will remain soundly in the black.

Acting Governor Shan Tsutsui announced a temporary hiring freeze on vacant positions in the Executive Branch on Friday, saying it is necessary to conserve dwindling financial resources in light of the ongoing federal shutdown and upcoming debt ceiling deadline.

“Over the short-term it’s not as big of an impact; but as the lieutenant governor has mentioned, one of the things that we are critically worried about is how long the duration of the shutdown lasts…”

As federal sequestration measures are scheduled to take affect by midnight, Gov. Neil Abercrombie and state Finance Director Kalbert Young will hold a news conference regarding Hawaii’s response to the automatic nationwide spending reductions.

Projects that he said could benefit from such collaboration include the new Kihei High School, the Maui Memorial Medical Center, roadway infrastructure, and partnerships with key entities on the islands of Lanai and Molokai.

“Today, I believe that this new council led by Council Chair Baisa, is not only capable, but very prepared to make those tough decisions that will have a lasting impact on all of our lives.”
