The Maui Charter Commission will meet this Thursday,  May 19, to review and approve its Draft Final Report detailing eleven proposed amendments to the County Charter.  

Finally, Council’s alternative language to Proposal No. 11 modifying the terms of, and the removal process for, Corporation Counsel and the Prosecuting Attorney was rejected and the Commission voted to eliminate the proposal from consideration in its entirety.

The Maui Charter Commission once again conducted public meetings on Monday and Tuesday to hear testimony and deliberate on proposed County Charter amendments leading up to submission of its Draft Report to the County Council on Feb. 18.  

The Maui Charter Commission is holding a virtual public meeting Feb. 3 at 9 a.m. to hear public testimony about revisions to the draft report, which has 40 proposed amendments to the County Charter that are under consideration for the November 2022 ballot.

The commission passed 85 charter amendment proposals which have been condensed into 40 ballot proposals and related ballot questions for the commission’s further consideration.

A year of proposals to amend Maui County’s charter, which must be submitted by Feb. 18, 2022, was built upon this Thursday as Maui voters prepare for the 2022 election.

The Maui Charter Commission is nearing the end of its year-long review and will consider the eight remaining Executive Branch proposals and take up the final theme of “Miscellaneous and New Matters” during an online meeting Thursday, Dec. 2 from 9 a.m. to noon.

A proposal dividing the Department of Housing and Human Concerns into two distinct departments was adopted, as was one recommending the appointment of Corporation Counsel and the Prosecuting Attorney from a short list of nominees selected by an independent selection commission.  Seven proposals were deferred to the next meeting due to time limitations.

The Maui Charter Commission continued its year-long evaluation of proposed charter amendments at a virtual meeting last week with the approval of four proposals under Theme G – Planning. The Commission’s next meeting Nov. 18 addresses the police and Executive Branch. 

The Maui Charter Commission will receive testimony and discuss the remaining 10 proposed charter amendment under Theme G – Planning and also consider Theme H- Police at its next regular online meeting on Thursday, Nov. 4 at 9 am.

At last Thursday’s Maui County Charter Commission meeting, proposals were adopted that would significantly change the selection process and requirements for people serving on County boards and commissions.

The Maui Charter Commission will meet again on Thursday at 9 a.m. to receive testimony and discuss additional proposed revisions to the Maui County Charter.   As it moves through its list of 130 proposals placed before it, the Commission continues to encourage public participation at its regularly scheduled meetings held virtually.  

Over the next several months the Charter Commission will continue to work through a list of 130 ideas and proposals from the public on how to improve Maui County operations through Charter amendments.  

The Maui Charter Commission will meet Thursday, Sept. 30 at 9 am to receive public testimony about 25 proposals related to ethics and board/commissions as part of its year-long review of proposed amendments to the County Charter, Maui County’s governing document.

Over the next several months the Maui County Charter Commission will discuss 130 charter amendment proposals that will be considered for placement on the November 2022 ballot.  At its meeting on Thursday, the Commission chose not to adopt seven of the proposals placed before it, deferred action on another, and transferred two to the County Council.  

At the upcoming meeting Commissioners will consider whether to adopt ranked-choice voting as the electoral system for council elections.  A ranked-choice voting system is one in which voters may rank candidates by preference on their ballots, a significant change from our current system whereby voters may only vote for one candidate in each race.  

If ratified by voters during the November 2022 election, the proposal would change the current countywide “at-large” election process in which all county voters select all nine councilmembers, to a system where voters would elect councilmembers from within three “regional districts”, each district comprised of three residency areas.

The County Charter Commission will continue its review of proposed Charter amendments as it takes up proposals to change the way the County Council is elected at its next meeting Thursday (Sept.2) at 9 am.

This is the latest in a series of meetings scheduled over the next several months by the Commission to obtain input and insights from the community related to proposed Charter amendments that will be considered for placement on the ballot in November 2022.
