The warning level surf is the result of a large northwest swell that will rapidly build from northwest to southeast down the island chain today.

A large northwest (330 degrees) building down the island chain this morning will peak today, then slowly ease through midweek, according to the NWS.

A large northwest swell is building across the state, resulting in a high surf warning for the north and west facing shores of various islands.

Surf is expected to be in the 10 to 15 foot range along the north facing shores of Maui, Molokaʻi and Hawaiʻi Island.

Forecasters from the National Weather Service say a large north swell, combined with locally generated wind waves, will continue to produce rough surf throughout the day.

High surf advisories issued for Saturday with two 8-12 ft+ swells coming in for the weekend crowd. It also looks like Saturday and Sunday will have light winds as well, which will undoubtedly translate to more great surf sessions.

Surfing during a rising swell is the most dangerous time to be out in the water because you never really know how big it’s going to get until it is sometimes too late.

Forecasters from the NWS expect surf to build to 20-25 foot range along the north facing shores this afternoon and tonight. Surf along the west facing shores is projected to be in the 15-20 foot range.

The light winds have been hanging around for a while, making exceptional surf sessions with the glassy conditions. There is one downside though, the water has been COLD.

Surf is expected to be 12 to 16 feet along the north and west facing shore of Kauai and Niihau, and the north facing shores of Maui and Oahu. West shore surf on Molokai and Oahu is expected to be in the 8 to 12 foot range.

A northwest swell will keep surf heights near advisory levels along the north and west facing shores of much of the state today.

A high surf advisory has been extended to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, 2013. Surf along the affected north shores will be 14 to 18 feet; and 8 to 12 feet along the affected west shores.

Surf is expected to build to 12 to 18 feet along the north facing shores, and 8 to 12 feet along the affected west facing shorelines.

Surf along the north facing shores will be in the 15 to 20 foot range, and surf along the west facing shores will be 10 to 15 feet.

A northwest swell will bring 12 to 18 foot surf to the north and west facing shores of certain islands through 6 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013.
