Preliminary data shows that speed contributed to nearly half of the 16 fatal crashes, impairment is suspected in several cases — and two lives could possibly have been saved by use of a seatbelt or helmet. With six pedestrians, one motorcycle rider and one ATV rider among the victims, HDOT is stressing continued vigilance and safer choices.

The Click It or Ticket, national seat belt awareness campaign netted 270 seatbelt violations and 217 violations for using a mobile electronic device while driving. There were also citations issued for other violations.

Maui police have already issued 236 traffic citations and made three arrests during the first few days of a seatbelt enforcement campaign that runs through Nov. 29.

Maui police are conducting traffic enforcement in school zones across Maui County this week.  The enforcement effort includes the use of the Department’s Solo Bike Detail. 

Maui police issued a total of 142 seatbelt citations during the first week of the nationwide Click-It-Or-Ticket campaign that began on May 13th.  

Every 33 seconds, one child under the age of 13 is involved in a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Maui Police Department issued a total of 1,596 citations during a two-week Click It Or Ticket seat belt enforcement campaign that ran from May 23 to June 5, 2016.

Although Hawaiʻi has one of the highest overall seatbelt usage rates in the nation at 93%, only 73% of back seat passengers were observed wearing their seat belts.

Maui police say the man who died following a single-car accident in Kihei on Monday did not die of injuries sustained in the crash, and was wearing his seatbelt.
