There is no tsunami threat to Hawaii following a large magnitude quake near the east coast of Honshu Japan. The quake was initially reported to be 6.8, but the USGS has the magnitude listed at 6.5.

With the second group of Japanese survivors of the March 11 Japan earthquake/tsunami due to arrive today, First Hawaii Bank is extending its donation collection period for the Aloha Initiative to July 30.

Today, Hawaii Medical Service Association (HMSA) announced it has made a total donation of $82,995 to Aloha for Japan to support recovery from the earthquake and tsunami last month.

The Maui tennis community, including Mayor Arakawa and former Councilman Bill Medeiros came out Saturday, April 9 to Wailea Tennis Club and helped raise more than $10,000 for the “Kokua Japan” relief fund.

Maui Tropical Soaps is just one example of how many Maui businesses continue to find creative ways to donate products, supplies, and money to help in the Japan tsunami relief effort.

The 7.1 magnitude earthquake was reported shortly after 4:30 Hawaii time this morning.

In a statement released by the Hawaii Tourism Authority today, Mike McCartney, President and CEO, said that despite an anticipated decrease in airlift from Japan, the overall number of air seats will be relatively flat compared to the same period last year.

The Hawaii Tourism Authority is projecting an 18.3 percent decline in arrivals from Japan for the month of March, less than the 25 percent drop initially projected following the events on March 11.

The American Red Cross and the Japan-America Society of Hawaii (JASH) are the receipients of $100,000 contributed by Hawaiian Electric Industries, Inc. (HEI) along with its subsidiaries American Savings Bank, Hawaiian Electric Company, Hawaii Electric Light Company and Maui Electric Company to support recovery efforts from the Japan earthquake and tsunami aftermath.

Here in Maui County, there was $600,000 in damages reported to homes and businesses, and $2.7 million in damage to government infrastructure.
