A High Surf Advisory has been posted by the National Weather Service for north and west-facing shores of Molokaʻi and north shores of Maui through 6 p.m. Thursday. Surf is expected from 15 to 20 foot faces for north shores and 10 to 15 foot faces for the west side of Molokaʻi.

Expect strong breaking waves, shore break and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous.

A Small Craft Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service for the ʻAlenuihāhā & Kaiwi channels along with Maui County windward waters through 6 a.m. Thursday for northeast winds at 10 to 20 knots and rough seas of 8 to 14 feet. Today, Tuesday December 9, 2014

We expect partly sunny skies today with isolated afternoon showers. Winds are variable up to 15 mph. In the afternoon we can expect a sea breeze to develop for leeward and interior spots due to daytime heating. The lack of trades will mean any pollutants (cane smoke, car fumes, etc…) will hang in the air. The UHSOEST vog model also shows some volcanic haze spreading up to Maui County from the Big Island. High temperatures should fall in the range of 78° to 83° and around 70° at 5000 feet.

Tonight

Mostly clear skies expected tonight for Maui County. Winds are variable up to 15 mph. Low temperatures are expected in the range of 62° to 67° with a low of about 48° at 5000 feet. Without cloud cover to trap the heat, greater radiational cooling is expected to occur making for a crisp night.

Looking Ahead

Winds are forecasted to increase Wednesday and Thursday as a front moves across the islands. This weak front is not expected to be a huge rain-maker but light showers will favor windward and mauka areas. The timing of this front brings it to Maui County Wednesday night. Winds will fill in behind the front out of the north then northeast, turning easterly by Friday. A second stronger front expected next weekend is forecasted to reach Maui County Sunday with an increase in windward and mauka showers and will bring strong and gusty winds in its wake.
