Windy Conditions, Gale Warning Posted

Alerts (as of 1:00 a.m.)

A Gale Warning is posted for all island waters starting Friday at 6 a.m. in the morning. Winds out of the east from 25 to 35 knots and seas of 8 to 12 feet are expected.

A Wind Advisory is posted from 6 a.m. Friday to 6 p.m. Saturday. Northeast to east winds from 15 to 30 mph are forecast with gusts getting up to 50 mph or more. Winds will be strongest over mauka areas and ridges and downslope of the mountains. Over the summit of Haleakalā winds could gust up to 60 mph.

    Looking Ahead

    Trade winds will continue over the islands, becoming strong and gusty by Friday and staying that way through the holiday weekend. Dry and stable conditions are expected to move over the islands from the east with mostly dry conditions continuing into Saturday. The airmass is forecast to gradually moisten from late Saturday through Monday, leading to increasing trade wind showers that will spread leeward on the smaller islands.

    Partly cloudy skies with a slight chance of windward showers. Windy conditions with northeast winds expected from 15 to 30 mph, gusting to 50 mph. High temperatures from 85° to 90°.

    UV index at 12 (“extreme” exposure level)

     

    Tonight

    Northeast winds are expected from 15 to 25 mph or more. Mostly clear and windy with a slight chance of windward showers. Low temperatures from 74° to 79°.

    Malika was born and raised in Hilo. She began her career in news at KGMB9 in 2007. As a part of the Hawaii News Now weather team, Malika was nominated for two Emmy Awards for excellence in weather reporting and won the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Journalism Award for her reporting on Hawaii’s tsunami damage in 2011. In 2019, Malika was recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists Hawaii Chapter in the category of Science Reporting for her Big Island Now news report on what was happening beneath the sea surface at the ocean entry of the Puna lava flow.
