Fair Weather Expected Through Veteran’s Day

Forecasters with the National Weather Service say a powerful storm off of the Kamchatka Peninsula a few days ago generated a large northwest swell that is expected to reach the Hawaiian Islands tonight, and persist through early Wednesday Morning.  A High Surf Warning is posted from 9 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 10, 2014, to 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 12.  The NWS says surf heights will increase to 20 to 30 feet along the north and west facing shores of Niʻihau and Kauaʻi, and along the north facing shores of Oʻahu, Maui and Molokaʻi.

Partly cloudy skies are expected today for windward and mauka areas with isolated showers in the forecast. Mostly sunny skies are forecasted for leeward areas in the morning then clouding up a bit in the afternoon as daytime heating kicks up our sea breeze. Scattered showers are possible for interior and lee spots in the afternoon. High temperatures should fall in the range of 81° to 86° with a high of about 66° at 5000 feet. Winds are expected to be variable up to 15 mph.

Tonight

Tonight we should be mostly clear with just isolated showers expected and variable winds up to 15 mph. Low temperatures should fall in the range of 64° to 75° with a low of about 50° at 5000 feet. The moon is 87.3% full tonight.

Looking Ahead

The northerly winds that followed the front are becoming lighter and more easterly. A dry pattern of daytime sea breezes and nighttime land breezes is expected through Veteran’s Day. That means lots of morning sunshine in leeward and interior spots with cloud cover building in the afternoon. If showers occur they should be limited and short-lived. The second half of the week, winds are expected to veer out of the south-southwest as a cold front approaches and it could get wet. Will keep an eye on the models and bring you the latest.
