Winds mainly affecting northeast terrain of Maui, Moloka’i and Lāna’i. The National Weather Service advises that winds this strong can bring down tree branches and make driving difficult. Use extra caution when driving and be careful when opening and closing doors. If camping in the area, be sure your tent is well anchored.

A Small Craft Advisory is posted for all Maui County waters through 6:00 a.m. Friday for rough seas up to 12 feet. Inexperienced mariners should avoid navigating in these conditions.

Looking Ahead

Southwest winds might usher in a few showers on Friday as a front approaches from the northwest. The southwest winds are expected to become stronger with locally windy and gusty conditions possible overnight Friday through Saturday, especially over northeast areas of higher terrain where downsloping winds are more likely to develop. The front will also bring overcast skies and increasing showers across the island chain during the weekend. Frontal passage for Maui County is expected late Saturday. I’ll watch the situation and let you know if any prefrontal bands of clouds and showers develop ahead of the front. Dry northerly winds are forecasted to build behind the front and will gradually shift out of the northeast then south early next week.
