A memorial service was held Sunday for Carly “Charli” Scott, who went missing on Maui six years ago, as her family continues to fight for the return of her remains.

She was five months pregnant at the time of her disappearance with a child fathered by her ex-boyfriend, who is now serving a life sentence after being convicted of second degree murder in March of 2017 for the crime.

As part of Sunday’s service, Charli’s mother Kimberlyn Scott had a prayer said over Charli’s few remains, including part of a jawbone, which continue to be housed at the Maui Police Department’s Forensic Facility in Wailuku.

Family members continue to protest the retention of Charli’s remains and launched a petition asking that the County of Maui and State of Hawaiʻi work with the family to find a way to see them released so that Charli may be “allowed the human dignity of a burial.”

The petition had garnered more than 3,300 signatures by Sunday night.

The family asked for privacy during a portion of the service in which a prayer was to be said within the forensic facility.

“We ask for privacy after the Prayer because this will be the first time we have seen, or indeed, been close to any part of Charli in six years,” Kimberlyn wrote in an online message before the service.

A bagpipe tribute and Hawaiian blessing were held as part of the ceremony.

Butterflies were also released as part of the memorial service, which was held six years to the day that Charli went missing.

Charli’s dog was brought to the service as flowers were scattered in Charli’s memory.
