DOH Revises Hawaiʻi Exposure Quarantine Guidance Based on CDC Recommendations

The Hawai‘i Department of Health announced that effective today it is reducing the required quarantine period of those who have been exposed to COVID-19 from 14 days to 10 days to “improve compliance without significantly increasing the risk of transmission in the community.” The new quarantine guidance does not modify any travel quarantine provided for in the governor’s proclamations related to the COVID-19 emergency.

Mayor Interview: Six COVID Clusters Identified on Maui, Two Consecutive Days of Double-Digit New Cases

The state Department of Health has identified six COVID-19 clusters on Maui that are currently under investigation.  Three of the clusters were identified at bars or nightclubs for a total of 22 cases.

Father and Adult Son to Return to California Following COVID-19 Quarantine Arrests at Kahului Airport

A father and his adult son, both from California, are set to return to the mainland following their arrest at Maui’s Kahului Airport for alleged violation of Maui’s Rules and Orders.

Dec. 4, 2020 COVID-19 Update: 106 New Cases (73 O‘ahu, 15 Maui, 11 Hawai‘i Island, 3 Kaua‘i, 4 Out-of-State); 10 Deaths

There were 106 new COVID-19 cases reported in Hawai‘i on Friday, including 73 on O‘ahu, 15 on Maui, 11 on Hawaiʻi Island, three on Kauaʻi and four in Hawai‘i residents diagnosed outside of the state. The Maui count today included five cases in Kīhei, four in Lahaina, two in Kahului, and one each in Wailuku and Makawao.

Maui to Become First in State to Rollout AlohaSafe Alert App

Maui County Mayor Michael Victorino announced today that the AlohaSafe Alert application that has undergone pilot testing on Lānaʻi and Hāna has been approved for full rollout in Maui County, making Maui County the first County in the State to utilize this resource to assist in curbing the spread of COVID-19.

Ige’s Request to Extend Federal Funding for Hawai‘i National Guard COVID-19 Assistance Approved

The funding would cover 800 soldiers and airmen, and the state has the ability to request additional funding for up to 1,300 soldiers and airmen.

Dec. 3, 2020 COVID-19 Update: 144 New Cases (118 O‘ahu, 14 Maui, 7 Hawai‘i Island, 2 Kaua‘i, 3 Out-of-State); 2 Deaths

There were 144 new COVID-19 cases reported in Hawai‘i on Thursday, including 118 on O‘ahu, 14 on Maui, seven on Hawaiʻi Island, two on Kauaʻi and three in Hawai‘i residents diagnosed outside of the state. The Maui count today included cases in Kahului, Kīhei and Lahaina.

$1.2M for UHERO COVID-19 Economic Recovery Research

The $1.2 million will enable UHERO, in UH Mānoa’s College of Social Sciences, to hire two full-time faculty and build capacity for applied research on the most pressing issues facing Hawaiʻi amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Dec. 2, 2020 COVID-19 Update: 78 New Cases (63 O‘ahu, 4 Maui, 1 Hawai‘i Island, 1 Kaua‘i, 9 Out-of-State)

There were 78 new COVID-19 cases reported in Hawai‘i on Wednesday, including 63 on O‘ahu, four on Maui, one each on Hawaiʻi Island and Kauaʻi and nine in Hawai‘i residents diagnosed outside of the state. The Maui count today included cases in Lahaina and Kula. Both Kīhei and Lahaina have a medium range of infections with 41 cases reported in Kīhei in the last 14 days, and 23 cases in Lahaina reported over the same period.

Maui Financial Opportunity Center Opens in Wailuku

A Financial Opportunity Center is now open in Wailuku to provide intervention for economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic. With its new location in Wailuku, the FOC aims to assist 3,000 Maui residents and families in qualifying for affordable rentals and mortgage financing over the course of three years.

Dec. 1, 2020 COVID-19 Update: 44 New Cases (32 O‘ahu, 5 Maui, 6 Hawai‘i Island)

There were 44 new COVID-19 cases reported in Hawai‘i on Tuesday, including 32 on O‘ahu, five on Maui and six on Hawai‘i Island. Maui count today included cases in Kīhei, Lahaina and Makawao. Kīhei darkened to the medium range two weeks ago with 41 cases reported there in the last 14 days.  Lahaina is also in the medium range with 19 cases reported over the same period.

Sen. Schatz Urges Hawaiʻi to Maintain Expanded COVID-19 Contact Tracing Program

U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i) sent a letter to Gov. David Ige to urge him to maintain Hawai‘i’s expanded COVID-19 contact tracing program when the current federal funding runs out Dec. 31.

House COVID-19 Committee Offers Recommendations on State’s Pre-Travel Testing Program

The House Select Committee on COVID-19 Economic and Financial Preparedness sent a proposal to Governor David Ige and the Mayors of all four counties to modify the State’s Safe Travels Hawaiʻi Program which requires travelers coming to Hawaiʻi have a negative COVID-19 test before boarding their plane.

Nov. 30, 2020 COVID-19 Update: 85 New Cases (66 O‘ahu, 9 Maui, 4 Hawai‘i Island, 1 Moloka‘i, 1 Kaua‘i, 4 Out-of-State)

There were 85 new COVID-19 cases in Hawai‘i on Monday, including 66 on O‘ahu, nine on Maui, four on Hawai‘i Island, one each on Moloka‘i and Kaua‘i, and four in residents diagnosed outside of the state. Maui cases included five in Lahaina, three in Kīhei and one each in Kahului and on the island of Molokaʻi. Kīhei darkened to the medium range two weeks ago with 37 cases reported there in the last 14 days.  Lahaina is also in the medium range with 19 cases reported over the same period.

Nov. 28, 2020 COVID-19 Update: 76 New Cases (48 O‘ahu, 17 Hawai‘i Island, 9 Maui, 1 Kaua‘i, 1 Out-of-State)

There were 76 new COVID-19 cases in Hawai‘i on Saturday, including 48 on O‘ahu, nine on Maui, 17 on Hawai‘i Island, one on Kaua‘i, and one in a resident diagnosed outside of the state. Maui cases included at least four new positive in Kīhei and one case each in Kahului and Lahaina. Kīhei darkened to the medium range two weeks ago with 36 cases reported there in the last 14 days.  Lahaina is also in the medium range with 12 cases reported over the same period.

Drive-Through COVID-19 Testing set for Saturday, Dec. 5, in Hāna

Drive-through COVID-19 testing will be held on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hāna Ball Park.

Moloka‘i Voucher Recipients Can Still Collect Gift Certificates on Monday, Nov. 30

The gift certificates for Friendly Market, Kualapuʻu Market and Misaki’s were sent to Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi residents who received COVID-19-related assistance through the County of Maui Hawaiʻi Emergency Laulima Partnership program.
