Douglas Maui Power Outages

This is a running list of power outages for Maui. The company is closely monitoring Hurricane Douglas’ movement in order to stage crews in areas most likely to be affected. A hurricane warning is currently in effect for Maui.

Hurricane Warning Siren scheduled for 8:30 a.m. alerting residents to Shelter in Place and Stay Informed

The County of Maui will sound warning sirens for Hurricane Douglas at 8:30 a.m. today to alert Maui County residents to shelter in place and stay informed.

Hurricane Warning Issued for Maui, Douglas Closing in on Hawaiian Islands (8 a.m. Update)

Maui County has been upgraded from a Hurricane Watch to a Hurricane Warning in the latest update issued by the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.  The system has maintained its Category 1 strength with 90 mph sustained winds and higher gusts.  It is currently located 145 miles E of Kahului, Maui and 235 miles E of Honolulu.  

All State Forest Lands Closed as of Sunday Morning

Out of an abundance of caution and to keep forest users and emergency responders safe during Tropical Cyclone Douglas,  the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife is closing all State forest lands on Sunday, July 26, 2020, until the threat has passed.

Hurricane Warning for Kauai and Oahu, Douglas Draws Closer to Hawaii as Category 1 (2 a.m. Update)

The system has maintained the same intensity and strength with 90 mph sustained winds and remains a Category 1 hurricane. Current movement is toward the WNW at 16 mph.  Douglas is about 190 miles E of Kahului, Maui and 285 miles E of Honolulu.

Maui Residents Urged to Shelter in Place Overnight and Through Sunday

Mayor Michael Victorino is urging Maui County residents to shelter in place overnight and through Sunday due to Hurricane Douglas. County crews plan to assess damage and any additional safety concerns after the hurricane has passed.

Hurricane Douglas Maintains Category 1 Strength, Drawing Closer to Hawaii (8 p.m. Update)

Douglas has maintained its Category 1 status with 90 mph sustained winds, according to the latest 5 p.m. update from the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.  The system is now 240 miles E of Hilo.  According to the latest cone of uncertainty, a portion of South Maui is no longer included in the cone of uncertainty.  

Maui County Emergency Shelter Plans

Mayor Michael Victorino announced the County of Maui will open emergency shelters on Maui Island at 7 p.m. tonight (Saturday, July 25).  Shelters on Lanai and Molokai will open tomorrow (Sunday, July 26) at 7 a.m.  Opening times and locations may change depending upon the weather. Residents are strongly encouraged to shelter IN PLACE because space is limited at the emergency shelters due to physical distancing precautions.

Mayor Victorino Urges Residents to Redouble Efforts to Curb Spread of COVID-19

Mayor Michael Victorino called upon Maui County residents to redouble their efforts to practice health and safety protocols to curb the spread of COVID-19.  The statement comes as the state posted its third consecutive day of record high single-day increases in COVID-19 Cases.

Haleakalā National Park to Close at 5 p.m. (Saturday, July 25) Ahead of Douglas

Due to the potential impacts of Hurricane Douglas and the Hurricane Watch issued by the National Weather Service, Haleakalā National Park will temporarily close starting at 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2020 until further notice.

Hawaii Airports, Harbors, Highways Update: Resources Increased at Keanae, Maui

Based on the current forecast, Maui District has increased resources at Keanae for possible east Maui response. Roadwork previously scheduled on Hawaii Island and Maui for Saturday, July 25 and Sunday, July 26 has been cancelled.

Hurricane Warning Issued for Oahu, Category 1 Douglas Continues on WNW Path Toward Hawaii (2 p.m. Update)

Douglas has weakened slightly to a Category 1 Hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 90 mph.  In the latest forecast issued at 12 p.m. Oahu remains under a Hurricane Warning.  Here on Maui, a Hurricane Watch and Tropical Storm Warning remain in effect.  Douglas moving toward the WNW at 16 mph and is located about 298 miles East of Hilo (475 miles ESE of Honolulu).

Category 2 Douglas Continues Move Toward Hawaii (7:40 a.m. Update)

Hurricane Douglas underwent slight weakening overnight, but remains a Category 2 Hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph.  The system was last located about 440 miles E of Hilo and 635 miles ESE of Honolulu. Present movement is toward the WNW at 18 mph.  

Category 2 Douglas Weakens Slightly, Tropical Storm Warning for Maui and Big Island (11 p.m. Update)

Douglas has weekend slightly to a Category 2 Hurricane, but continues on a path toward the Hawaiian Islands.  A tropical storm warning was issued for Maui and Hawaii Counties in addition to Hurricane Watches, which are already in effect for Maui and Hawaii Counties, as well as the island of Oahu.

Numerous State Parks Closing in Advance of Douglas

Numerous Hawai‘i State Parks and park activities are being closed until after Tropical Cyclone Douglas has cleared the state.  All State Parks on Maui will be closed on Saturday, July 25, until an all clear has been given and storm damage assessments have been conducted.

Hawaiian Airlines Cancels All Neighbor Island Flights on Sunday, Some Maui Flights Canceled on Saturday

Hawaiian Airlines is canceling all Neighbor Island flights on Sunday, in addition to select flights Saturday evening between Honolulu and Maui and the Island of Hawaiʻi, due to adverse weather expected from Hurricane Douglas.

Maui Mayor Issues Emergency Proclamation for Hurricane Douglas

Beginning Saturday, all County of Maui facilities, including County parks, pools and the Waiehu Golf Course will be closed until further notice. Reservations for pool use have been canceled. The County is working with the American Red Cross to provide emergency shelters for people in Maui, Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi.
