Coffee Roaster Catches Fire in Kula Structure
Fire crews from the Kula Station arrived on scene to find a commercial coffee roaster on fire. The blaze was isolated primarily to the chimney which serves as the main heat exhaust for the roaster.

UPDATE: Extra Enforcement Puts “Tail Spin” on Return of Vessel to Molokai
A group of about 40 protesters returned to Kaunakakai Harbor on Molokai on Saturday as the Safari Explorer vessel resumed port calls to the island. Despite an agreement in place, demonstrators expressed anger and resentment over additional enforcement presence saying it, “brought out many more protesters, and made things worse.”

Crews from the Maui Fire Department’s Air-1 helicopter returned at first light this morning to conduct a few water drops. Ground crews will also continue mopping up hot spots within the burned area today.
Car Impaled by Guardrail in Waiale Accident
The vehicle struck the guardrail; and then became impaled by the guardrail–which went through the front windshield and exited through the back windshield. The 22-year-old woman driving the car was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center with non-life-threatening head injuries
Bicyclist Critically Injured Below Ulupalakua Ranch
The bicyclist, described as an elderly male, struck a guardrail and fell about 10 feet down a ditch, according to accident reports. Authorities say man was medivaced to Maui Memorial Medical Center with chest injuries and multiple traumatic injuries to his extremities.
Hawaii Senate Confirms Maui Attorney as District Court Judge
Mimi DesJardins was confirmed by the Hawaii State Senate today as Maui’s newest District Court of the Second Circuit. DesJardins fills the vacancy created by the promotion of the Honorable Judge Rhonda Loo to the Second Circuit Court on Maui.
Hana Gets New Landfill Recycling Center
East Maui residents will soon have a central location to recycle old plastics, newspaper, cardboard, aluminum, bi-metals and some plastics. The new Hana Landfill Recycling Center will open at 4 p.m. on Monday, January 24, 2012 at the Hana landfill across from the office on Waikoloa Road.

Public school teachers in Hawaii voted against a proposed six year contract during a ratification vote yesterday. Beginning today, the HSTA will initiate a union-wide conversation about options going forward.
Hawaii-Based Marines Killed in Afghanistan Helicopter Crash
Authorities say they were part of the CH-53D Sea Stallion helicopter squadron, based of out Marine Corps Base Hawaii, at Kaneohe Bay. The release of identity of those killed is pending notification of next of kin.
