John and Tweetie Lind of Kīpahulu, Maui honored with The Nature Conservancy’s Kāko‘o ‘Āina Award

John and Tweetie Lind established Kīpahulu ʻOhana and Kapahu Living Farm to revive and restore loʻi kalo farming used for centuries by Hawaiians. They led their community to create a mālama i ke kai (care for the ocean) community action plan and worked for 10 years to establish the Kīpahulu Moku Community Based Subsistence Fishing Area.

Maui outdoor lighting ordinance victory for seabirds, turtles

Bill 21 amends Maui County’s lighting ordinance to increase protections for Hawai‘i’s threatened and endangered seabirds and sea turtles by requiring outdoor light fixtures to limit blue light. It will be phased in over three years.

“Those are wonderful prices. Whoever wins the lottery on these 60 homes is going to truly win the lottery, so that better damn well be a fair lottery,” King said with a laugh. “I’m a little bit worried about the future asks, but I’m going to support this,” said Councilmember Kelly King. While the price is right for homes being built at Pulelehua, questions are raised about fair practices and proper prescedent.
