BREAKING: PGA Tour cancels The Sentry tournament on Maui in 2026; state, county, nonprofits brace for economic hit
The event had been announced last month as the 2026 PGA Tour season opener to be held Jan. 8-11 at the Plantation Course. The event had an estimated economic impact of $50 million per year on Maui. The tour did not elaborate on the status of the event past 2026, but noted that ongoing drought conditions, water conservation requirements, agronomic conditions and logistical challenges were the main factors in the event not being held this year on Maui.

Kīlauea volcano is erupting. At approximately 4:44 a.m. on June 7, 2023, the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory detected glow in Kīlauea summit webcam images indicating that an eruption has commenced within Halemaʻumaʻu crater in Kīlauea’s summit caldera, within Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.

UPDATE: No Tsunami Threat to Hawaii After Large 7+ Alaska Quake
Update: 9:34 p.m. 7.21.20:
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued an update saying that based on all available data, the tsunami threat from a large earthquake in the Alaska Peninsula has now passed for areas covered by their bulletin. No tsunamis were observed at nearby deep ocean gages and there is no longer a tsunami threat from this earthquake. The public is advised to “remain observant and exercise normal caution near the sea. Otherwise, no action is required.”
North Kīhei Fire 100% Contained at 50 Acres, Mop-Up Underway
A 50 acre brush fire reported yesterday in Kīhei is now 100% contained. The department currently has one engine company and two tankers conducting mop up operations.

Traffic Advisory: Honoapi‘ilani at Papalaua (Mile 11-12)
Maui police are responding to a motor vehicle accident along the Honoapiʻilani Highway near Papalaua (between Mile 11-12). The pickup truck reportedly hit a tree and flipped over. The vehicle was off to the side of the road. The incident was reported at around 6:09 a.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2020.

There’s a power outage in Pukalani and Makawao this morning due to Maui Police Department’s request to de-energize lines along Makawao Avenue. There was a report earlier this morning of an individual on the top of an electric pole. Police remain on scene.
Mayor Victorino issues statement on Governor’s supplemental proclamation
“The Governor stated that his proclamation only allows water activities, and does not allow walking or running on the beaches for exercise purposes,” Mayor Michael Victorino said. “My proclamation previously allowed exercise on the beaches, so this is a notable change for residents.”

Kahikinui Fire 100% Contained, Evacuations Lifted, 300 Acres Burned
A brush fire burning mauna of the Piʻilani Highway in East Maui has forced the closure of a portion of the highway. The blaze was moving northwest toward the Kahikinui subdivision and residents of at least a dozen homes were being evacuated.
