Beginning Monday, May 11, 2026, the Maui Police Department Traffic Division will participate in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Click It or Ticket” enforcement campaign. Motorists will see heightened traffic enforcement and patrols, which will continue through Sunday, May 31, 2026, and include the use of unmarked patrol vehicles to enforce seat belt and child passenger restraint laws.

In June 2022, the State of Hawaiʻi updated the Child Passenger Restraint Law. A child safety seat inspection event will take place on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2023, between 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Kīhei Police Station.

Maui police have already issued 236 traffic citations and made three arrests during the first few days of a seatbelt enforcement campaign that runs through Nov. 29.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT), together with all four county police departments and child passenger safety advocates, will participate in National Child Passenger Safety Week, Sept. 15 to 21, 2019.

Parents and caregivers on Maui can learn how to correctly install their child safety seats at a free inspection to be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015, at the Maui Marketplace in Kahului.

The fine for a violation is up to $500. Last year, the four county police departments issued a total of 2,206 child restraint citations.
