Effective Sept. 6, the Department of Water Supply will change its water distribution disinfectant from chloramines to chlorine in the Upper Kula water system because of severe drought conditions Upcountry.

A Water department employee was responding to an alarm from the facility and confirmed that there was a gas leak in a storage unit that housed chlorine tanks used to treat drinking water.

Firefighters arrived to find a 150 foot section on both lanes of Hāna Highway covered with round hockey puck type discs. It was believed to be solid chlorine tablets typically used in swimming pools.

Water customers on the Upper Kula water system may notice a change in their water as the County Department of Water Supply switches the distribution system disinfectant from chlorine back to chloramines on or around Wednesday, March 25, 2015.

The Olinda Water Treatment Facility returns to the use of chloramines for disinfection following a temporary switch to chlorine in August when reservoirs were at near-empty conditions.
