Council focuses on zoning issues throughout this month
The Maui County Council will meet July 8 at 9 a.m. to consider zoning legislation on agricultural tourism, parking requirements for electric vehicles, food trucks in the agricultural district, the size of accessory dwellings and the definition of various land-use terms.
Pilot program provides water-from-air generators to Hawaiʻi Technology Academy on Maui
A pilot program is now in place, providing water-from-air generators, water bottles, and UV lights and replacement filters to the Hawai’i Technology Academy. It’s part of a larger program to bring clean drinking water to schools all over the Island. The announcement was made by the nonprofit Eye of the Needle Holistic Living organization.
Hui O Ka Wai Ola’s Coastal Water Quality Report to be presented by the Maui Nui Marine Resource Council
Hui O Ka Wai Ola will share findings from a biannual report that outlines ocean water quality conditions along a 40-mile stretch of Maui’s leeward coast. The organization will also share notable trends and patterns indicated by monitoring coastal water quality in key areas around the island, giving focus to new data from the areas of Lahaina, North Kīhei and Lāna’i.

The public is advised of a water quality exceedance of enterococci at Ulua Beach, Maui. Levels of 137 per 100 mL have been detected during routine beach monitoring.
Safety of Maui drinking water after the August wildfires is the focus of UH research
The team has collected water samples from Kula and Lahaina that are being tested for contaminants in labs on Maui and Oʻahu. Ten samples had been tested as of Aug. 27 and about 60 more are headed to the labs.
Surfrider’s water quality monitoring expands; reports ongoing pollution in Wailuku River
The Surfrider Foundation’s Blue Water Task Force program had two important additions this year, including a new lab site at Pāʻia Youth and Cultural Center. In addition, Surfrider Maui partnered with community members from Hāna to collect water quality samples there for the first time.
Topping the list, for the second year in a row, is Wailuku Stream with 27% of samples exceeding health standards in 2022.
Brown Water Advisory Issued for Maui
The public is advised to stay out of flood waters and storm water runoff “due to possible overflowing cesspools, sewer, manholes, pesticides, animal fecal matter, dead animals, pathogens, chemicals, and associated flood debris.”
Water Quality Monitoring Suspended, Public Urged to Use Common Sense
Due to the shelter-in-place order from Governor David Ige, the state Department of Health has suspended all routine coastal beach monitoring and will not resume monitoring until the order is lifted. No updated water quality testing information will be available to the public to inform them of personal risk in recreating in the water, “so please use common sense and stay safe,” the Department advises.

A Brown Water Advisory has been issued at West Maui and North Shore (Waiheʻe to Hoʻokipa Beach Park) on Maui.
High Bacteria Count Advisory at Hanaka‘ō‘ō, Maui
The public is advised of a water quality exceedance of enterococci at Hanakaʻōʻō, Maui. Levels of 238 per 100 mL have been detected during routine beach monitoring. That exceeds the threshold level of 130 enterococci per 100 mL.
