The US Department of Housing and Urban Development announced the allocation of nearly $12 billion in Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery funds for communities across 24 states and territories.  The County of Maui in Hawaiʻi received more than $1.6 billion for wildfires.

The Kibou for Maui Project in Japan hosted a Maui leadership delegation from May 19 to 23, 2024, to facilitate an educational and strategic exchange between Maui recovery effort leaders and experts in Japan’s Tohoku region, which underwent significant rebuilding after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Tables and tickets are now available for the annual Maui Calls, Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s signature fundraising gala, and food & wine tasting event, which will take place on Aug. 12, from 6-10 p.m.

The Japanese Cultural Society of Maui announced this year’s prestigious Nihon Bunka Award recipients: Deidre Tegarden, Christopher Curtis and Lynn Shikatani Curtis.

The Nisei Veterans Memorial Center is announced its August “An Afternoon with the Author” ZOOM talk on Saturday, Aug. 8 at 1:30 p.m. Author Melinda Clarke will share the backstory to her book “Waymakers for Peace: Hiroshima and Nagasaki Survivors Speak.”

April’s workshop is dedicated to Chinese wellness and will be presented by Dr. Jeffrey Tice of the Longevity Health Center.

Deidre Tegarden returns to her previous post as executive director of the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center. It was a position she held prior to accepting a role as Chief of Staff for Maui Mayor Michael Victorino last year–which she resigned from effective Dec. 15, 2019.

The mayor said a search for Tegardenʻs replacement is already underway. 

Former State Sen. Jill N. Tokuda has been named as the new executive director of the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center.

According to Victorino, more than 300 applications were received, including more than 100 applications for directorship and deputy director positions.

Awards were issued to Councilmember Elle Cochran, Sherri Dodson, Joy Medeiros, Mary Lee Sagawinit, Deidre Tegarden and a posthumous award to Tina Garzero.

State House of Representatives candidate Deidre Tegarden chose the Kihei Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall as the site of her official entry into the race on Monday, Feb. 29.
