While the invasive algae species, Avrainvillea erecta, has previously been documented elsewhere in Hawaiʻi, its confirmed presence along Kauaʻi’s south coast raises concern about its potential to spread and impact native marine ecosystems. 

Originally purchased in 2022—the first such policy in the United States—the insurance provides up to $2 million in funding for rapid coral reef repair following hurricane or tropical storm damage.

Hawai‘i is joining other ocean states and now requires a license for recreational ocean fishing for non-Hawai‘i residents. Revenues from license sales will be used exclusively to support fishing in the state.

The ARMS attract different types of organisms – including invasive species – for data collection.

The DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources has taken emergency action in an effort to salvage highly valuable corals severely damaged in Honolulu Harbor’s channel. The damage took place two weeks ago and was caused by a dredging platform’s anchor and cable dragging over numerous coral colonies.

Kealakekua couple, Tyron and Kacie Terazono have agreed to pay a $76,400 fine for the illegal harvest of aquarium fish, offshore of Kawaihae in Hawai‘i County on Feb. 20, 2020.

The state Board of Land and Natural Resources voted Friday to impose a $100,000 fine on the owners of a luxury yacht that damaged hundreds of coral colonies when its anchor swung through the coral bed during an incident in October of 2018 at Kailua Bay on Hawai’i island.

This week, the department introduced the first of 100,000 native sea urchins in Waikīkī to help control over 4 acres of invasive algae.
