The Hawaiʻi Community Foundation has deployed an additional $265,000 through its Stronger Hawaiʻi Initiative to support disaster response efforts on Kauaʻi and Niʻihau following Hurricane Lowell.

The Hawaiʻi Community Foundation today announced the appointment of Reid Gushiken as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, effective Sept. 14, 2026. In this role, Gushiken will oversee HCF’s financial and administrative operations and help guide the foundation’s long-term stewardship of resources in service to Hawai‘i’s communities.

As Hawaiʻi enters the peak months of hurricane season, the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation is ramping up support for its Stronger Hawaiʻi Fund to help communities prepare for and respond to disasters.

A dozen Hawaiʻi-based food makers are getting a boost as they look to expand their locally sourced products to shelves in major retailers. A $25,000 grant from the Ulupono Fund at the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation is lowering barriers for these entrepreneurs to use the state’s first high pressure processing system.

Hawaiʻi State Federal Credit Union will donate $50,000 to the Hawaiʻi Resilience Fund at the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation and the Safety Net Fund at Aloha United Way. Sentry is honoring the players who qualified for The Sentry 2026 by making charitable donations to Maui nonprofits in their names—supporting Maui United Way and player-selected organizations that strengthen the Maui community. This release highlights a total of $120,000 in contributions made on behalf of 60 qualifying players.

The campaign encourages individuals and other organizations to donate to Hawaiʻi Community Foundation’s Hawaiʻi Resilience Fund or Aloha United Way’s Safety Net Fund, both of which help support nonprofits who are facing historical federal funding reductions. Donations are encouraged from Dec. 1 to 24. 

On July 1, 2025, Cabral became the new  leader of Rotary District 5000, representing the Islands of Oʻahu, Maui, Kauaʻi, Lānaʻi, and Hawaiʻi, with over 1,500 members. 

In the wake of the devastating wildfires on Maui last August, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Hawaiʻi has been involved in several community efforts to help those impacted by the tragedy. One of these efforts is a grassroots collective called Laukanaka to provide and deploy traditional Native Hawaiian healing practices to those impacted by the Maui wildfires.

Ahead of the one-year anniversary of the devastating Maui wildfires, the most comprehensive study focused on understanding and mitigating the health and social impacts of the fires, has received a $1.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to continue its groundbreaking work.
