Maui filmmakers Brian Kohne and Stefan Schaefer will be featured at Akakū’s July Upstairs Salon, taking place Thursday, July 17, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the media center’s upstairs space in Kahului.

A pulse-pounding new drama set on Oahu’s North Shore is contributing to the state’s economy in a big way. “Rescue: HI-Surf,” a co-production of John Wells Productions, Warner Bros. Television and FOX Entertainment, hired over 2,100 local cast and crew to be part of the first season. Collectively, the hires earned more than $31.75 million in wages.

Brian Kohne, an award-winning music producer and filmmaker who grew up on Maui, has been named as the new County of Maui Film Commissioner, according to an announcement by the county’s Office of Economic Development today. His official start date is April 1, 2024.

The Senate Ways and Means Committee visited a site being considered for a potential multi-acre film studio in Kailua-Kona and heard updates on the local film industry for its last stop on a three-day visit on Hawaiʻi Island. Considering yesterday’s agreement reached by SAG-AFTRA and film studios, the visit’s timing proved to be especially relevant.

A small sign waving demonstration was held on Aug. 29 by the same group, calling the approval a “double standard” saying they would like to see the same protocols available to Maui residents, ideally all people traveling to Maui.
