Gov. Josh Green today announced the upcoming opening of Kīpūola Kauhale, the state’s first and largest kauhale village on a neighbor island. Built from the ground up on Maui, Kīpūola – meaning “to enfold oneself with life, health, and well-being” – will provide 64 tiny homes and a new path to economic mobility for wildfire survivors and individuals experiencing homelessness.

The children of Elmer Lee Stevens, who lost their mother in the Lahaina fire, filed a petition with the court that, if granted, would allow them to join the settlement for the many residents who lost loved ones and homes in the fire.

A bill introduced by 13 representatives in the state House calls for establishing a permanent “Return-to-Home program” with an as yet undetermined amount of funding to return homeless people in Hawaiʻi to their home states.

The US Supreme Court ruled today in a case with sweeping national impact involving homelessness, by deciding 6-3 in favor of the City of Grants Pass, Oregon, which enacted anti-camping regulations that imposed civil punishment for homeless people sleeping in public places.

Ibarra will succeed Nanci Kreidman, DVAC CEO and co-founder, who announced her retirement, effective June 30.

The Visitor Industry and Maui Hotel & Lodging Association responded to Maui District Health Office’s donation request for homeless outreach. Donations were sought to serve the needs of the congregate populations of domestic violence, substance abuse and homeless shelters.

Finance Chair Kyle Yamashita (D-12, Upcountry, Maui) acknowledged that the committee’s approach included restoring funding to critical programs that were cut during the pandemic, tackling long standing large one-time funding priorities, and enhancing the state’s ability to withstand an economic downturn by shoring up its reserve funds.

These requests support Gov. Green’s priorities for affordable housing and infrastructure, reducing homelessness, protecting natural resources and climate, education, improving access to healthcare including mental health services, government efficiency, and reducing the cost of living.

The County of Maui was among approximately 30 states and 173 local homelessness programs across the nation that were awarded a total of $315 million in funding to address unsheltered individuals and families with severe service needs.

The proclamation allows for exemptions from certain processes that typically delay projects in order to expedite construction of low-impact kauhale, or tiny home communities.
