Maui police have launched a second degree murder investigation into the death of a 71-year-old man in Kahului, Thursday night.

As part of its ongoing efforts to harden the island’s electrical grid, Hawaiian Electric will begin 32 steel pole restorations in parts of Maui Veterans Highway, Pūlehu Road, and Dairy Road. No service interruptions to customers are expected.

Road users are advised that Puʻunēnē Avenue (Route 3500) will be closed overnight Dec. 8-12 for work between Papa Avenue and Kūihelani Highway (Route 380).

A Haʻikū man has succumbed to injuries sustained in a weekend motorcycle crash at the Dairy Road, Hukilike Street intersection in Kahului. Police say 28-year-old Matthew Perreira died on Tuesday morning while at the Maui Memorial Medical Center.  

A 28-year-old Haʻikū man operating a Harley Davidson motorcycle sustained life-threatening injuries in a mid-day accident on Sunday in Kahului.

The state Department of Transportation will conduct roadwork in Kahului and Waiehu on Maui this week, resulting in alternating lane closures.

The incident was reported at 1:32 p.m. on Sept. 29, 2013, at Piʻikea Inc. located on Hukilike Street, police said.
